The end of the Novena

Tomorrow, 27 November, is the anniversary of the birth of Ellen White, Adventist prophetess.

This Novena has asked her and all the angels and saints to pray with us for the return of the Adventist faith to the original teachings of Christianity.

I should note that requesting the prayers of deceased non-Catholics is not the norm, and that non-Catholics are not canonised as saints in the Catholic Church.  If Ellen White is in heaven, we do not know, but we can hope and pray that she is.  If she is, she will be praying with us.  If not, God hears our prayers - cf Romans 8:26.

This is therefore a private devotion, not one officially sanctioned by the Church, which I have shared with you.

Novena for Adventists - Day 9 - The Saints of the Church

Today we pray for Adventism, that its members may share the faith of the Saints of the Church, and share in their glory in heaven with Mary, the Virgin Mother of God, the Apostles, the Patriarchs, and all the Saints of God.  We pray, on the eve of Ellen White's birthday, that her teachings diminish and the teachings of Christ through his Church increase.  We ask Ellen, along with all the angels and saints, to pray with us for this blessing.

The Romanist points the sinner to the Virgin Mary, to penances, indulgences, and the absolution of the priest; and to this theory come those who would be saved in their sins, and those who would be saved by their own merit.
- Ellen White, Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, November 11, 1890

At last I saw the standard lowered, and those heathen were uniting with Christians. They had been worshipers of idols, and although they professed to be Christians, they brought along with them their idolatry. They changed the objects only of their worship, to images of saints, and even the image of Christ, and Mary the mother of Jesus. Christians gradually united with them, and the Christian religion was corrupted, and the church lost its purity and power.
- Ellen White, Spiritual Gifts, Vol 1, p103

And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:  [12]  So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.
- Acts 19:11-12 [KJV]

Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me;
- Romans 15:30 [KJV]

And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?  [27]  He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err.
- Mark 12:26-27 [KJV]

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
- Hebrews 12:1 [KJV]

But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,  [23]  To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,  [24]  And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.
- Hebrews 12:22-24 [KJV]

And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
- Matthew 16:18 [KJV]

Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
- Matthew 28:20 [KJV]

Novena for Adventists - Day 8 - The Mass

Today we pray for Adventism, which condemns the Lord's Supper as pagan and idolatrous, not able to recognise the Body of Christ in the Eucharist, not willing to recognise the biblical pattern of each action and phrase used, out of fear and suspicion.  We pray that they come to see what Christians since the first century have seen, and believe what has been believed by Christians for nearly 2000 years.

The Scriptural ordinance of the Lord's Supper had been supplanted by the idolatrous sacrifice of the mass. Papal priests pretended, by their senseless mummery, to convert the simple bread and wine into the actual "body and blood of Christ."
- Ellen White, The Great Controversy, p59

Unsound doctrines, superstitious rites, and idolatrous ceremonies were incorporated into her faith and worship.
- Ellen White, The Spirit of Prophecy Vol 4, p43

I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.  [52]  The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?  [53]  Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.  [54]  Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.  [55]  For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.  [56]  He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.  [57]  As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.
- John 6:51-57 [KJV]

From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
- John 6:66 [KJV]

Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.  [28]  But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.  [29]  For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.
- 1 Corinthians 11:27-29 [KJV]

And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Novena for Adventists - Day 7 - The Sabbath

Today we pray for Adventism, which teaches rest on the 7th day, and objects when we celebrate Christ's resurrection on the 8th day.  We pray that they may discover that their rest is in Christ, that we are not bound by days that were signs of the Old Covenant, that they may commemorate the new creation in Christ, instead of the old creation in Adam, and that they may celebrate our exodus from sin and not just Israel's exodus from Egypt.

I saw that the number [666] of the image beast was made up; and that it was the beast that changed the Sabbath and the image beast followed on after and kept the Pope's, and not God's Sabbath. And all we were required to do, was to give up God's Sabbath and keep the Pope's and then we should have the mark of the beast and of his image.
- Ellen White, A Word to the Little Flock, p19

The Sabbath will be the great test of loyalty, for it is the point of truth especially controverted. When the final test shall be brought to bear upon men, then the line of distinction will be drawn between those who serve God and those who serve Him not.
- Ellen White, The Great Controversy, p605

The light given me by the Lord at a time when we were expecting just such a crisis as you seem to be approaching was that when the people were moved by a power from beneath to enforce Sunday observance, Seventh-day Adventists were to show their wisdom by refraining from their ordinary work on that day, devoting it to missionary effort. ...
At one time those in charge of our school at Avondale inquired of me, saying: 'What shall we do? The officers of the law have been commissioned to arrest those working on Sunday.' I replied: 'It will be very easy to avoid that difficulty. Give Sunday to the Lord as a day for doing missionary work. Take the students out to hold meetings in different places, and to do medical missionary work. They will find the people at home and will have a splendid opportunity to present the truth. This way of spending Sunday is always acceptable to the Lord.'
- Ellen G. White, Testimonies, vol 9, p232, p238

One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.  [6]  He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.
- Romans 14:5-6 [KJV]

And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
- Acts 20:7 [KJV]

Novena for Adventists - Day 6 - Soul Sleep

This is the Novena post for the evening of 23 November 2006.  I am posting it a day early, as I will probably be unable to get to my PC on the evening of the 23rd.

Today we pray for Adventism, who deny the spirit of man.  Instead of believing in a heaven filled with saints praising God, to them, we are alone, with no living cloud of witnesses to pray for their fellow Christians on earth.  We pray that they come to understand the biblical teaching that our fellow-believers have indeed become spirits made perfect, and that we praise God united with them.

How utterly revolting is the belief that as soon as the breath leaves the body the soul of the impenitent is consigned to the flames of hell! ... Upon the fundamental error of natural immortality rests the doctrine of consciousness in death—a doctrine, like eternal torment, opposed to the teachings of the Scriptures, to the dictates of reason, and to our feelings of humanity
- Ellen White, The Great Controversy, pp477-478

Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
- Ecclesiastes 12:7 [KJV]

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
- Matthew 10:28 [KJV]

And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
- Luke 23:43 [KJV]

Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord
- 2 Corinthians 5:6 [KJV]

And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?  [27]  He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err.

Novena for Adventists - Day 5 - The Dietary Laws of Moses

Today we pray for Adventism, which teaches its followers to try to live according to selected laws of the Old Covenant.  There were many health-related laws under the Old Covenant, but these are not used by Adventism.  Dietary laws were symbolic, and Peter was shown one aspect of the symbolism in vision.  It is not our diet that God is pleased with, it is our heart.  We pray that God reveal this to the followers of Adventism.

God did not prohibit the Hebrews from eating swine's flesh merely to show his authority, but because it was not a proper article of food for man. It would fill the system with scrofula, and especially in that warm climate produce leprosy and disease of various kinds.
- Ellen White, Healthful Living, p183

You should be teaching your children. You should be instructing them how to shun the vices and corruption's of this age. Instead of this, many are studying how to get something good to eat. You place upon your tables butter, eggs, and meat and then your children partake of them. They are fed with the very things that will excite their animal passions, and then you come to meeting and ask God to bless and save your children. How high do your prayers go?
- Ellen White, Testimonies, Vol 2, p362

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.  [15]  Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.
- Isaiah 7:14-15 [KJV]

And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;  [19]  Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?  [20]  And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
- Mark 7:18-20 [KJV]

I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean.  [15]  But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died.
- Romans 14:14-15 [KJV]

Novena for Adventists - Day 4 - False Prophecies

Today we pray for Adventism, which has, several times, set dates for the return of Christ, and has followed a prophetess whose prophecies were not in harmony with the Bible, and turned out to be false prophecies.  May the realisation of this fact bring them closer to the truth.

I have seen that the 1843 chart was directed by the hand of the Lord, and that it should not be altered; that the figures were as He wanted them.
- Ellen White, Early Writings, p74

I also saw that God was in the proclamation of the time in 1843. It was His design to arouse the people and bring them to a testing point, where they should decide for or against truth.
- Ellen White, Early Writings, p232

For a time after the disappointment in 1844, I did hold, in common with the advent body, that the door of mercy was then forever closed to the world ... I was shown in vision, and I still believe, that there was a shut door in 1844.
- Ellen White, Selected Messages 1, p63

But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.  (21)  And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?  (22)  When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
- Deuteronomy 18:20-22 [KJV]

Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.
- Hebrews 13:9 [KJV]

Novena for Adventists - Day 3 - Persecution

Today we pray for Adventism, whose theology of the Sabbath leads them to feel persecuted by other faiths, which in turn leads them to fear and distance themselves from other Christians.  We hope that they may find a sense of belonging and identity in the Christian community, the communion of saints, without having to find that sense of belonging and identity from a sense of persecution.

Then I saw the leading men of the earth consulting together, and Satan and his angels busy around them. I saw a writing, copies of which were scattered in different parts of the land, giving orders that unless the saints should yield their peculiar faith, give up the Sabbath, and observe the first day of the week, the people were at liberty after a certain time to put them to death.
- Ellen White, Early Writings, p282

The end of all things is at hand. The time of trouble is about to come upon the people of God. Then it is that the decree will go forth forbidding those who keep the Sabbath of the Lord to buy or sell, and threatening them with punishment, and even death, if they do not observe the first day of the week as the Sabbath.
- Ellen White, Historical Sketches, p156

Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.
- Romans 12:14 [KJV]

Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.
- Hebrews 13:9 [KJV]

One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.  [6]  He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.
- Romans 14:5-6 [KJV]

And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
- Matthew 16:18 [KJV]

Novena for Adventists - Day 2 - The Investigative Judgement

Today we pray for Adventism, which teaches strange doctrines not known to the original Christian faith.  Jesus was said to be returning in 1843, and later 1844, and when he failed, the doctrine of the Investigative Judgement was developed to cover up that error in predicting Jesus' return.  May God lead them to realise that many of their teachings are found neither in the Bible, nor in the original faith of the Apostles, and, in fact, contradict them.

In 1844, at the end of the prophetic period of 2300 days, He entered the second and last phase of His atoning ministry. It is a work of investigative judgment which is part of the ultimate disposition of all sin, typified by the cleansing of the ancient Hebrew sanctuary on the Day of Atonement.

The Lord has shown me in vision, that Jesus rose up, and shut the door, and entered the Holy of Holies, at the 7th month 1844; but Michael's standing up (Dan. 12:1) to deliver his people, is in the future.
- Ellen White, Word to the Little Flock, 1847

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
- John 19:30 [KJV]

Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
- Hebrews 9:12 [KJV]

But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;  (13)  From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.  (14)  For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
- Hebrews 10:12-14 [KJV]

Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,  (20)  By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;  (21)  And having an high priest over the house of God;  (22)  Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
- Hebrews 10:19-22 [KJV]

Novena for Adventists - Day 1 - Anti-Catholic Teachings

Today we pray for Adventism, that it might see the light and truth it rejects in the Catholic faith it despises.  Many within their fold fear the Catholic faith, despise it, and speak against it, not fully comprehending its beauty and faithfulness to the truth contained in the Bible.  May God soften their hearts so that they may see the love we share, and the glory we give God in our lives and in our worship.

God's word has given warning of the impending danger; let this be unheeded, and the Protestant world will learn what the purposes of Rome really are, only when it is too late to escape the snare. She is silently growing into power. Her doctrines are exerting their influence in legislative halls, in the churches, and in the hearts of men. She is piling up her lofty and massive structures, in the secret recesses of which her former persecutions will be repeated. Stealthily and unsuspectingly she is strengthening her forces to further her own ends when the time shall come for her to strike.
- Ellen White, The Great Controversy, p508.

Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.
- Luke 6:22 [KJV]

If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
- John 15:18 [KJV]

Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
- 1 John 3:13 [KJV]

But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

A Novena for Adventists

In the Nine Days leading up to the 179th anniversary of the birth of Adventist prophetess Ellen White, we will say a novena - a prayer continued for nine days - for those who follow her teachings today.

The novena (from the Latin novenus = ninth) is based on several biblical types, most notable the 9 days between the Ascension of Christ into heaven and Pentecost, during which time the Apostles, the Virgin Mary, and many of Jesus' disciples prayed.

Acts 1:4-9, 13-14, 2:1-2 [KJV]  And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.  [1:5]  For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.  [1:6]  When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?  [1:7]  And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.  [1:8]  But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.  [1:9]  And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.  ... [1:13]  And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.  [1:14]  These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.  ... [2:1]  And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.  [2:2]  And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

Further significant nines: Jesus was in Mary's womb for nine months; Jesus died at the ninth hour.

On the following nine days, we will pray about various aspects of Adventism, in the context of the life and teachings of Ellen White, and ask her, the saints, the angels, and the Virgin Mary to pray with us Christians here on earth as we ask God to bring healing to the theology of the Adventist church, to bring release from bondage to the members of the Adventist church, and to let the light and love and truth of the Catholic Church of Christ spread throughout the world.

We will pray about the following:

Day 1 - Saturday 18th November - Anti-Catholic teachings
Day 2 - Sunday 19th November - The Investigative Judgement
Day 3 - Monday 20th November - Persecution
Day 4 - Tuesday 21st November - False Prophecies
Day 5 - Wednesday 22nd November - The Dietary Laws of Moses
Day 6 - Thursday 23rd November - Soul Sleep
Day 7 - Friday 24th November - The Sabbath
Day 8 - Saturday 25th November - The Mass
Day 9 - Sunday 26th November - The Saints of the Church

Note: As the prayers will be posted in the evenings, they will depict the events of the following day, where appropriate.

The Adventist Pulpit takes up the Bacchiocchi issue

The Adventist Pulpit has got a post on Samuele Bacchiocchi's "Gregorian Controversy"

Bacchiocchi's response to the Gregorian debate

For those of you who don't know about this yet, there is an ongoing controversy surrounding the credentials of Samuele Bacchiocchi, a prominent Adventist scholar.

He got his PhD at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, and was the first non-Catholic to do so.  That is where agreement ends between the two parties regarding his achievements there.

Today he published the first part of his response to their allegations in his Endtime Issues newsletter number 159, which can be found on his website.

In short, here is a series of posts on various blogs that go into the issue:

Bacchiocchi's "Gregorian Controversy" [on the XCG blog]
Bacchiocchi's thesis - the Gregorian Controversy [on my Sabbath Keepers blog]
Samuele Bacchiocchi is no longer [on Belief.net]
Bacchiocchi's Sabbath to Sunday [on the Hobbes' Place blog]
Is Bacchiocchi Misrepresenting Himself? [on the Spectrum Magazine blog]
National Enquirer: Adventist Edition [on Trevan Osborn's Divergence blog]

Bacchiocchi's current crisis [on my Sabbath Keepers blog]
Which chapter did Sam publish? [on my Sabbath Keepers blog]

A few quibbles, and some commentary on the actual issue thereafter:

" ... historically the adoption of Sunday observance in place of the seventh-day Sabbath, has been attributed to the  authority of the Catholic Church, rather than to the initiative of Christ or the Apostles."

Actually, Catholicism has taught for centuries that Sunday was instituted by the Apostles:

"The Apostles therefore resolved to consecrate the first day of the week to the divine worship, and called it the Lord's day. St. John in the Apocalypse makes mention of the Lord's day; and the Apostle commands collections to be made on the first day of the week, that is, according to the interpretation of St. Chrysostom, on the Lord's day. From all this we learn that even then the Lord's day was kept holy in the Church. . . .
"But the Church of God has thought it well to transfer the celebration and observance of the Sabbath to Sunday.
"For, as on that day light first shone on the world, so by the Resurrection of our Redeemer on the same day, by whom was thrown open to us the gate to eternal life, we were called out of darkness into light; and hence the Apostles would have it called the Lord's day.
"We also learn from the Sacred Scriptures that the first day of the week was held sacred because on that day the work of creation commenced, and on that day the Holy Ghost was given to the Apostles."
-- The Roman Catechism, also known as the Catechism of the Council of Trent, 1566 AD

Bacchiocchi quotes this text, but not in its entirety, missing the important sections that would not have left him so surprised.

"Some Adventists have gone as far as fabricating the rumor that I am a Jesuit spy, paid by the Vatican to do subversive activities in the Adventist."

There are no Jesuit spies.  That's anti-Catholic propaganda.  Bacchiocchi's right - he's not a Jesuit spy.

" ... the official letter written by Dr. Barbara Bergami ... This is a scanned copy of Dr. Bergami’s letter"

The letter has had the contact details of someone cropped from it.

Bacchiocchi mentions Bishop Murray and Barbara Bergami.

Searching on Google can find these people.

Barbara Bergami [Google search]

This page lists a possible contact number / e-mail address.

Bishop Murray, of the Diocese of Kalamazoo

Bishop James Murray of Kalamazoo

The US Catholic Conference of Bishops lists his address as

Most Reverend James A. Murray
Diocese of Kalamazoo
215 N. Westnedge Avenue
Kalamazoo, MI 49007-3760

Bishop Murray also has an e-mail address, listed on his diocesan website.

The Catholic Heirarchy website, which lists all bishops, dioceses, etc, has pages for Bishop Murray and the Diocese of Kalamazoo.

Bacchiocchi uses the words "imprimatur—approval" a lot.

A week ago, I wrote the following to Bacchiocchi by e-mail:

Regarding the meaning - you claim that is means approval by the Catholic Church of the contents of the text.

That is simply not correct.  In a broader sense, an Imprimatur consists of 3 parts - a Nihil Obstat, an Imprimi Potest, and an Imprimatur (used in a narrower sense, as a third part of the Imprimatur in the broad sense.)  What is printed in your book is ONLY the Imprimatur used in the narrower sense - which says nothing about approval of content, but refers only to the permission to print given AFTER the Nihil Obstat and Imprimi Potest are issued.  The Nihil Obstat and Imprimi Potest are the declarations of approval, and are followed by the final approval by the bishop - the Imprimatur in the narrow sense.  Because you do not have a Nihil Obstat or Imprimi Potest, you should not be claiming approval of the contents, but merely that permission to print was granted.  With a Nihil Obstat and Imprimi Potest, the Imprimatur does signify final approval of the bishop.  But without them, it's the equivalent of permission to print a telephone directory, but it is simply never issued in that way.  You get Nihil Obstats on their own, but not Imprimaturs.

Also important to note is that IF (and it is clearly NOT) your Imprimatur were used in the broader sense of the word, it would still not mean approval by either the Vatican or the Catholic Church - but ONLY the bishop issuing the Imprimatur.  Such texts can, and do, contain error.  They never constitute official approval by the Church.

Since you regularly admit that this was not easy to get, and was done as a favour to you by your mentors, we are left with two undeniable facts:

First, the Imprimatur obtained was merely permission to print, not approval of content; and second, it was done as a favour and certainly never implied approval of the contents by the Vatican or the Church.  It seems rather unbelievable that the Catholic Church would give approval to a book that was not thought to be in agreement with Catholic teaching.  Granting it as a favour organised by your mentors explains that.  But few people with insight into the matter would believe that any real approval was given.

You may claim I do not understand what an Imprimatur is, as you did 2 years ago, but I assure you that you are mistaken.  This is easily verified by a detailed look at what the three steps are about.

On to his images.

"This is the picture of the Baccalaureatus diploma"

The middle signature reads "Herve Carrier."  He was rector of Gregorian University at the time Bacchiocchi graduated.

"Since we were five students who earned the magna cum laude distinction in the Baccalaureatus program, a lot was cast to decide who would receive the one silver medal donated by the Pope. Only one medal is donated for the students who earn academic distinctions. The assignment of the medal is determined by casting a lot. I was the lucky one. The lot fell upon me."

Who were the other five?  They're listed in the image Bacchiocchi presents - see the full page with images.

Googling them brings of nothing I can find significant ... perhaps readers of other languages can locate them online.  If they amounted to anything.

But the booklet he scanned must be in public record somewhere.  Therefore it can be verified far more easily than waiting for Gregorian to respond.

"An asterick precedes my name "*Bacchiocchi Samuele, laicus," to indicate that I received the gold medal from Pope Paul VI. This time no lot was cast, because I was the only student among the Licentiati who qualified for the gold medal. This is the picture of the Academic Report dated October 16, 1972"

This is another document that should be easily verifiable.  At least relatively so ... one would need access to somewhere that kept such things.

"I did not feel comfortable attending a Mass which for Catholic is a re-enactment of Christ’s sacrifice. The Bible clearly teaches that we have no right or need to sacrifice Christ afresh."

The Catholic Church agrees with Bacchiocchi on what the Bible says.  He would probably have felt a lot more comfortable had he understood what Catholicism teaches.

"P. S. I plan to submit again to the Pontifical Gregorian University and to Bishop James Murray of Kalamazoo, this latest and more comprehensive response, as soon as the response is completed.  PLEASE PRAY FOR ME. May the Lord help us to resolve this controversy in a peaceful way without resorting to the legal process."

On this we agree.  I find the extra evidence quite interesting, and quite compelling.  Of course, a lot of it needs to be verified.  But he has provided documentation that should be verifiable without Gregorian providing it from their archives of student records.

I await Bacchiocchi's follow-up.  He's off to Australia now, and when he gets back, there should be more.  I hope to see his explanation of a) the imprimatur, b) the continued use of the imprimatur on an edition for which it was not obtained, c) the use of the name of Gregorian University Press on newer editions in a way that looks official, and d) evidence of the initial publication by them.

On this evidence alone, however, I think it's a very good time for Gregorian University to either recant or to provide their own documentation.  Their argument is strong.  But now Bacchiocchi's argument is also strong - nearly as strong.  If the images Bacchiocchi has scanned in and put on his website can be verified, they will certainly need to provide an explanation to back up their claims, if that is their intent.  If his images cannot be verified, it's still a case of his word against theirs.  But on both sides, the words are strong.

Ex-Adventist website shut down

I got this e-mail, with good and bad news [hyperlinks added by me]:

I want to give you an update concerning our outreach ministry to Seventh-day Adventists (formerly, sdaoutreach.org).  For almost twenty-five years we've been helping Adventists move from Law to Grace and have seen the Lord do wonderful things.  Apparently our website is making such an impact on Adventism that it has come under legal scrutiny and this past month the SDA Church threatened us if we do not change the address of our site.  In the interest of seeing the gospel go forward, we have changed our website to:  exAdventist.com.

It would be very helpful if you would please note this change and continue to send people our way who have questions about the Sabbath, the Law, Ellen G. White or other "unique" Adventist doctrines.  This user-friendly website has ministered to hundreds of thousands, worldwide, helping people to get honest answers to their questions from God's Word.  We have a very large selection of resources available, including an interactive FAQ, relevant books, CD's, DVD'S and free downloadable messages.  If you would help us get the word out about this change of address, it would be a huge blessing. Let us know if we can help you in any way.

In His grace,

Bad news, in that the Adventist leadership did this.  Good news, in that the website was obviously making an impact, and that it continues.

Spurgeon: the faith that saves is not alone

"But," says one, "do you wish us to understand, that if a man is to be saved he must use violence and vehement earnestness in order to obtain salvation?" I do, most assuredly; that is the doctrine of the text. "But," says one, "I thought it was all the work of God." So it is, from first to last. But when God has begun the work in the soul, the constant effect of God's work in us is to set us working; and where God's Spirit is really striving with us, we shall begin to strive too. This is just a test whereby we may distinguish the men who have received the Spirit of God, from those who have not received it. Those who have received the Spirit in verity and truth are violent men. They have a violent anxiety to be saved, and they violently strive that they may enter in at the strait gate. Well they know that seeking to enter in is not enough, for many shall seek to enter in but shall not be able, and therefore do they strive with might and main.

Lutherans rediscover Purgatory

Father Tavard showed how purgatory has been understood by Catholics as both a place of punishment and a state of cleansing, perhaps even momentary, at the time of death. Among the mystics, the latter image has greater prominence inasmuch as final purgation means an encounter with the “fire of divine love which removes the effects of sin on the human person.

So says the USCCB page Lutheran-Roman Catholic Dialogue Addresses Life Beyond Death

Just found that via Bill Cork's blog.

Of note:

Lutheran and Roman Catholic members of the dialogue "concurred that prayers for the dead have their basis in Scripture and tradition, and that heaven is not a place of rejoicing individually in the Lord but of our being 'together' with him and with one another in joyful communion," said the Rev. James Massa, executive director, USCCB Secretariat for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs.

"Though Lutherans acknowledged the place of praying for deceased loved ones publicly and privately, they pressed their Catholic colleagues to explain how their own Church understands the effects of such prayer," said Father Massa.

Other Protestants will discover this in time.
